about

This is a new album of three compositions by guitarist and composer Chris Welcome. The music was written between 2010 and 2012 and recorded during that same time. It features some of the most active musicians on the NYC improv/jazz/new music scene as well as electronic parts realized by Maine based synthesizer guru, Kit Demos. All three pieces were written using chance methods developed by Welcome, but based on the practices of Cage, Stockhausen and others. These pieces occupy their own unique space, somewhere between experimental Jazz and modern Classical, with each of the three pieces having a different focus. “Wasteland” deals with the mixture of “human” (i.e. musical or tonal) sounds and “natural” (noise) sounds. Each of the three live instruments is paired with an electronic instrument at different points in the piece, thus determining the balance between those two sound-types. “Untitled” was written as a dual feature for Jonathan Moritz’s incredible abilities of extended saxophone technique and Kit Demos’ synth wizardry. “Colors” features ten musicians and clocking in at over 25 minutes, it is Welcome’s most ambitious recorded piece to date. It is both a study in form and arrangement, with all ten instruments being grouped in over twenty different combinations throughout the piece.
